On Saturday, April 12th, at 7:30 P.M., the Cronin Auditorium in Harvard, MA is bringing back the 7th Annual African Rhythms, a show of West African dance and music. The performance will be repeated Sunday, April 13th, at 7:30 P.M. at the Julie Ince Thompson Theatre at the Dance Complex in Central Square, Cambridge.
The performances are fund-raisers for the Build a School in Africa Project, a non-profit organization which is collaborating with Save the Children to build badly needed middle schools in southern Mali, West Africa. The first school was completed in the remote village of Dialakoroba in early 2006; the second middle school was finished in January 2007 in Massamagana, and a third school was just completed in the village of Koloni-Flala.
The partnership with Save the Children has enabled the project to make the most efficient use of its fund-raising dollars, since that organization already has an effective school construction program. Fundraising is now under way for a fourth school in the community of Diaka. Our goal is to raise another $10,000, about 40% of the cost of constructing a block of three classrooms.
African Rhythms features the fabulous Malian drummers from Troupe Baden’ya, under the direction of Seydou Coulibaly, and the Teriya Dancers, who are being joined by the dancers and drummers of Troupe Teranga, under the direction of Alice Heller and a repertory group directed by Fatou-Carol Sylla.
Drummers and dancers will perform dances from Mali, Senegal, and Guinea; the dances are representative of different ethnic groups and a variety of celebrations. The show will begin with a beautiful photo journal of Mali, and the program includes a showing of brief photo documentaries of the school building projects already completed. There will also be vendor tables selling a variety of crafts. 100% of the proceeds from the show will go to the school project, and all contributions are tax-deductible.
This high-energy show has always received rave reviews from the audience, and we invite you to share this dynamic experience with us. It‘s a show the whole family can enjoy. Ticket prices are $15 for Adults, $5 for children under 12, and will be available at the door. The Saturday show at the Cronin Auditorium is at the Bromfield High School on Route 111 in Harvard center, off Route 2.
The Dance Complex is located at 536 Mass Ave, Central Square, Cambridge. Seating at the Dance Complex is very limited, so advance tickets are available for purchase and definitely recommended. Contact Judy Lorimer, Project Director, at 978-433-2384, or e-mail jmlorimer@juno.com.
